No New Posts   MYMP Signs Contract under Star Records

February 16, 2009

February 14, 2009 · Kevin Paquet ·

The duo of Juris and Chin that is popularly known as MYMP has been quiet for the mean time with no recent releases that have really captivated the crowd the way their golden singles like Tell Me Where It Hurts, No Ordinary Love and a lot more have done. But this silence won’t beheld too long! The popular MYMP (make your momma proud) is back on track with a contract signed under Star Records and are about to release a new album in the upcoming month, which will also fall under the production of Star Records.

The title and the content of the album is still not mentioned but it’s said to be a more on a solo-flight directed album for Juris while Chin will still do his part in the album just without his guitar to emphasize the role of Juris for this said “solo” production. (does this still sound like MYMP then?)

Aside from the new album that is currently under production, MYMP has also secured themselves a slot during the Sunday Musical Show of ABS CBN, ASAP 09 taking part in the Sessionista’s segment joining Sitti, Nina, Richard Poon and the other big names. For those who cannot wait no longer to watch Juris and Chin perform together, you can catch the duo at the Araneta Coliseum this Sunday Februrary 25, 2009 for the repeat concert with the Side A. Let’s look ahead to more of the newly signed Star Records band, MYMP!

No New Posts   MYMP duo to jam with their heroes

February 16, 2009

November 21, 2008 Friday

Malaya Newspaper

Laid-back music artists Juris Fernandez and Chin Alcantara have found themselves in cloud nine, realizing they’re about to participate in a once in a blue moon big stage collaboration featuring themselves alongside two of their musical heroes: Side A and Freestyle.

The members of MYMP (Make Your Momma Proud), known for their acoustic flavor that brought them to widespread recognition, are both puzzled and ecstatic that they were picked to play in equal billing with such notable artists.

"Kinalakihan ko ang music ng Side A while Freestyle is way ahead of us in terms of being in the scene. This is really big," expresses Chin whose guitar playing has helped mold the sound of MYMP, complementing the vocal charm of his partner Juris.

The act behind popular renditions of familiar songs like "Tell Me Where It Hurts" and "Only Reminds Me Of You" will perform in a concert called "Back-To-Back-To-Back" scheduled on December 1 at the Araneta Coliseum. The one-night only concert is set to gather the biggest hits of each band, assuring music fans that every number has the recall to make their tickets worth every cent.

This would mark the first time that MYMP, which recently released its album "Now", will get on stage with both Side A and Freestyle – two bands that have already played back-to-back in previous shows. This makes their participation a key factor in making the triple treat a concert to remember, especially that there would be production numbers featuring all musicians together on stage. The singing half of the duo admits, "Medyo kinakabahan kami kasi they’re seasoned bands talaga and this is not a normal gig."

It should certainly be not an ordinary night as each group delivers its most popular recordings live in front of an expected mammoth crowd at the Big Dome, confident of having a good sound trip back into memory lane with songs such as "Forevermore", "Hold On" and "So Many Questions" from Side A, "Before I Let You Go", "So Slow" and "Bakit Ngayon Ka Lang" off Freestyle, and of course, tunes like "Get Me" and "A Little Bit" courtesy of MYMP which scored 7X platinum with their two-disc set "Versions and Beyond" in 2005.

Its album "New Horizon" turning gold in barely three months last year, MYMP is recognized as "Best Acoustic Act" by MYX Music Awards, "Best Performance in a Concert" by Aliw Awards, among other citations. The group is happy to reveal that their recent work is their most cohesive yet, having hit the target bull’s eye concept-wise. "For us, mas satisfied kami sa album namin ngayon kasi alam na namin saan papunta ang music namin. The public just identified us with the term ‘acoustic’ but we’re really a country act," Chin proudly stated.

Half-jokingly, he said that his only worry come the December 1st big night is the crowd might fall asleep when their on performing since they’re not as upbeat as the other two. He need not be bothered anyway; people have loved them because of their lullabies and not a soul would care to take a nap and miss a bit.

Tickets (priced at P2,625 for Patron A, P2,100 for Patron B, P1,750 for Lower Box, P1,150 for Upper Box A, P525 for Upper Box B, P263 for General Admission) are now available online at all Ticketnet (911-5555) outlets and at the Araneta Coliseum or at the Viva Concerts and Events

No New Posts   Why MYMP dumped record label which made them famous?

February 4, 2009

by: Edgar O. Cruz | STIR Editor (Chief Agitator)
2 Feb 2009 | 11:32 AM

MYMP has the reputation of being the biggest selling acoustic group in the country. Their two-CD album Versions and Beyond under the Ivory label sold seven times platinum featuring the groups signature marks, Juris Alcantaras effortless soprano voice and Chin Alcantaras the soulful acoustic guitar. Ivory management was very happy with MYMPs album sales but Juris and Chin were not. Tell Me Where It Hurts, their biggest hit, does not have a music video. The duo believes sales could have done better if it was properly promoted.

Despite the change of Ivory management, Chin and Juris decided not to re-sign with it after their five-year contract finished. They decided to sign with Star Records because of its marketing and distribution clout being a subsidiary of the global multi-media company, ABS-CBN. Management remains with Carla Lozada.

Juris and Chin formed MYMP, then going by the name Make Your Momma Proud, as MiriamCollege students more than 10 years ago. The bands original name was a tribute to Chins mom who passed away when he was still in sophomore school. The group originally had four members. They changed it to band names acronym when two members left and only Chin and Juris stayed. They proceeded to produce such hit songs as A Little Bit and Now.

As you can see, change is key to MYMPs success story.

When it performed at the Back 2 Back 2 Back with Side A and Freestyle, Juris brought in a surprisingly different act. The lady half of the MYMP package sang a Paramore song and belted out a loud-rocking number seemingly unlikely for someone known for her sweet, mellow touch. At one point, the front woman took off her shoes so she could appropriately jump while singing the rock track.

They repeated it in the move over to Star Records.

When it releases its debut album with Star Records this March which Juris and Chin are presently recording, MYMP will be reinventing itself. Produced by Jonathan Manalo, it will be entirely different from their previous albums. According to Star Records Managing Director Annabelle Regalado-Borja, This time, Juris will go solo. But Chin will still have his participation in the album. He will try not to play his guitar so that a different side of MYMP will be highlighted.

The band will also have a repeat of their hugely successful Back 2 Back 2 Back concert with Side A and Freestyle on February 15 aptly titled Love 2 Love 2 Love at the Araneta Coliseum with Naldy Gonzales as musical director. Tickets are available at all SM Ticketnet outlets, Araneta Coliseum box office, or call 911-5555 or 687-6181 loc 620 and 745. The show is a Viva Concerts and Events production.

No New Posts   MYMP signs contract with Star Records

February 4, 2009

by Napoleon Quintos|February 03, 2009 9:34 AM

MYMP is now officially Kapamilya after signing a contract with Star Records, the music arm of ABS-CBN. During the contract signing last January 28, ABS-CBN.com spoke with guitarist Chin Alcantara and vocalist Juris Fernandez where the former expressed his excitement about becoming part of the Star Records family.

MYMPs first project under Star Records will be the debut solo album of Juris. Chin revealed that he was actually the one who initially thought about Juris trying it out on her own. Sa akin nagsimula yung idea and then nasabi namin sa manager namin.

Meanwhile, Juris is looking forward to her first solo CD whose production will be supervised by Chin. Hindi naman entirely Ill be alone on this project kasi nandiyan pa rin si Chin. Magiging hands on siya pagdating sa lahat ng decision regarding the album, said Juris.

Chin and Juris are already working on the album, which is set to be released some time in March. The plan is to come up with an all-original album instead of just covering past hits. Pipilitin naming maging all-original yung album. Sa totoo lang mahirap yun but well try.

Until the album hits the music stores, fans can see MYMP performing every Sunday in the Sessionistas segment of ASAP 09 together with Aiza Seguerra, Nina, Duncan Ramos, Sitti, and Richard Poon.

Side A, MYMP and Freestyle Back For "Love 2 Love 2 Love"
By Viva Concerts
February 01, 2009

Last year was truly a season of excellently beautiful live performances in the concert arena. Viva Concerts "Back 2 Back 2 Back" featuring Side A, MYMP and Freestyle is one such excellent production.

And to showcase its drawing power and critical acclaim once again, a repeat of this show now billed "Love 2 Love 2 Love" will take center stage at the same venue, the Araneta Coliseum on February 15, 2009 8 pm.

Due to insistent public demand, a repeat of the sold-out show last December 1, 2008 from three formidable bands Side A, Freestyle, and MYMP, will take place as a post-Valentine offering.

"Back 2 Back 2 Back" transported the audience to heights of musical pleasure and "Love 2 Love 2 Love" aims to achieve the same feat in this season of hearts as their loyal patrons make it their romantic destination. The repertoire will be infused with more of love songs to cater to the season but those who were thrilled by the first outing need not worry because the organizers assure that the show will still be as excellent as how they have seen it last Dec. 1.

So, expect Side A to churn out classic hits "Forevermore," "So Many Questions," "Hold On," "Tell Me" etc. once again, as Freestyle does "Before I Let You Go," "Bakit Ngayon Ka Lang," "So Slow," "Half Crazy," "This Time," "Time Will Reveal," "Paano" among other hits, while MYMP is set to dish out their signatures "Tell Me Where It Hurts," "Kailan," "Get Me," "Especially For You," "Paalam Na," "Waiting in Vain," and "Crazy For You," etc. in "Love 2 Love 2 Love."

So, mark your calendars. Its a date on Feb. 15, 8 p.m. at the Araneta Coliseum.

Tickets are available at all SM Ticketnet outlets, Araneta Coliseum box office, or call 911-5555 or 687-6181 loc. 620 and 745. The show is a Viva Concerts and Events production.

No New Posts   Juris Not Going Solo. Period.

'No more intrigues, please'

Juris not going Solo.Period.

Is it true that MYMP female vocalist Juris Fernandez wants to go solo but her partner Chin Alcantara is preventing her from doing so?

"No," says the sweet-voiced Juris at the launching of their new album, "Now. " "Hindi ko pa iniisip talaga yung I'd go solo, kasi okay naman ang samahan namin ni Chin. But she said if ever I want to do a solo album, gusto niya, siya raw ang magpo-produce nito for me. Nahihilig kasi siya ngayong mag-produce ng album at idea nga niyang mag-solo album ako, but not having a solo career. "

We remember when their first album was released five years ago. There were three of them then but the other guy has since left them. Juris now has a boyfriend, a businessman who supports her singing career.

"It's been a very fulfilling five years in the local music scene, with our label, Ivory Music, now under a new, young and dynamic management," says Chin, who's MYMP's musical director. "I'm glad that in our new album, we're given the chance to explore our new contemporary acoustic sound and we're very excited on how our audience will respond to our latest efforts. "

"We personally chose the songs in this album and they're all recorded in the most heartfelt manner," adds Juris. "It's been two years ago since our last album and it's definitely worth the wait. "

Their new album is not just a compilation of cover versions as they have two original songs: the title song "Now" composed by Cattski Espina and the Christmas inspirational song, "Wish List. "

The revivals are John Waile's "Missing You," The Pretenders' "Human," Vonda Shepherd's "Baby Don't Break My Heart Slow," Sybil's "Make It Easy On Me," Madonna's "Cherish," Heart's "These Dreams," Wilson Philips' "Impulsive," Side A's "Set You Free," "Restless Heart's "When She Cries" and Paula Abdul's "Rush Rush. " What makes the album great for easy listening is really Juris' very relaxed rendition of the songs. She doesn't really have to go solo anymore as she practically owns each of the album they record.

September 4, 2008

M.Y.M.P. still makes Momma proud
SOUNDS FAMILIAR By Baby A. Gil
Friday, August 29, 2008

Among all the groups we have in the local music scene today, I do not think there is any that can boast of having more hits than M.Y.M.P. As most of you already know by now, those letters stand for Make Your Momma Proud and these guys do make, not just their brothers but everybody else proud of what they have accomplished. Take a look at what I remember off-hand from among their big sellers.

Only Reminds Me of You, Nothings Gonna Stop Us Now, You Got It All, Friend of Mine, Every Little Thing, Nakapagtataka, Ill Never Get Over You Getting Over Me, Especially for You, Get Me, Tell Me Where It Hurts, Crazy for You, True Colors, No Ordinary Love, Constantly, Tell Me and many others. Performed by the sweet expressive voice of Juris Fernandez with able backing vocals, guitar playing and arrangements by Chin Alcantara, plus bandmates Edward Jimenez on keyboards; Aemil Rivas, bass; and John Dexter, drums, these songs turned out to be some of the biggest hits of recent times.

Their sheer number should already assure M.Y.M.P. of immortality. And then not. Because think again. Twenty years from now when a singer from the future decides to do a new version of Crazy for You, the reference will not be M.Y.M.P. but the original artist, Madonna. It will be the same case with Nakapagtataka, a Filipino song which was originally popularized by Hajji Alejandro and later successfully covered by his daughter Rachel.M.Y.M.P. excelled or I should say, excels doing cover versions of hits by other artists.

Pop music immortality though hinges on original songs and at this point in its career, that is what should be paramount in the marketing strategy of M.Y.M.P. or any artist for that matter. And that is why I am glad that the latest album by the group has a new original as its first single. Titled MYMP Now, the CD is made up of the usual covers, which I am sure fans would enjoy, but there are two new works by Cattski Espina. These are Now, the new single and Wish List, an anthemic inspirational included in anticipation of the coming Christmas Season.

Hopefully, years from now, somebody will record Now or Wish List and there would be people who would remember how the songs were big hits by a group named M.Y.M.P. The other cuts are Missing You by John Waite; Human by the Pretenders; Baby Dont You Break My Heart Slow by Vonda Shepard; Set You Free by Side A; Make It Easy on Me by Sybil; Cherish by Madonna; These Dreams by Heart; Impulsive by Wilson Philips; When She Cries by Restless Heart; and Rush Rush, my favorite song from Paula Abdul.

MYMP Now marks the duos return to the recording studio after that hugely successful live album two years ago. You can catch them perform songs from Now and other hits at the MYMP Now album tour. It starts tomorrow, Aug. 30 at SM Bicutan followed by SM Taytay on Aug. 31; SM Fairview, Sept. 12; SM Bacoor, Sept. 28; SM North EDSA, Nov. 8; and SM Sta. Rosa, Nov. 9.

At its album launching, writers were asked to bring their old photos. Before entering the venue at Metro Walk, a photographer took new photos of the writers who came and later on, while Juris was singing, the "then and now" photos of the writers were flashed on the big screen, making everyone feel nostalgic.

No New Posts   Tinig ni Juris ng "MYMP", kakaibang langit ang hatid sa mga lalake?

August 24, 2008

Author: Dondon Sermino

So, nag-try lang ako.

After I graduated, nag-take na ako ng mga science courses, eh.

"Ayy! Wala! Magkaibigan lang kami!"

Paano kung ligawan siya ni Chin?

"Ayoko! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha!"

Bakit ayaw niyang magpaligaw kay Chin?

"Wala lang! Kasi, wala talaga. Brotherly lang talaga. At saka, wala talaga, eh! Ha! Ha! Ha!

Technology and the failing music industry

By Joy Festin and Katherine Lopez, Special to The Manila Times

May 20, 2008

Digital downloads are the future of the music industry. In the US, 48 percent of teenagers did not purchase a single CD in 2007and 37 percent of consumers own an iPod or other brand of portable MP3 player. Researchers predicts that by 2011, 50 percent of music sold will be digital.

In January 2008, Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple, stated that his companys iTunes Music Store has accounted for more than 70 percent of worldwide online digital music sales. Warner Music Group chairman Edgar Bronfman Jr. has stated that Apples iTunes was the download model and its iPodwhich necessitates the iTunes softwareis the default device.

However, the iTunes store has yet to be made available to citizens of the Philippines. Digital downloadsbe it through peer-to-peer file sharing (most often illegally without payment) or through legal online purchasesrequire Internet access. Online purchases, especially from international institutions, most often require credit card ownership.

According to AC Neilsen, 4.5 million Filipinos out of a total population of 76.5 million have Internet access. The Credit Card Association of the Philippines estimates around 4.6 million Filipino credit card holders.

The absence of the iTunes Store in the local market and other factors have created opportunities for several Filipino Internet companies that offer digital music downloads. Some offer alternative payment schemes such as pre-paid cards and automated teller machine transactions for non-credit cardholders. These companies also have created a niche market by offering Filipino music.

The seller

Fliptunes is just one of the many sites for downloading music. It is a music portal that retails music online. Customers can download songs from Fliptunes from P30 to P40 each. Videos can also be downloaded for P80 each.

The music industry today has changed dramatically, says Ronald Aniceto, president of Fliptunes Inc. Generally, people download for convenience. Instead of going out, you can just browse through the 70,000 songs in our collection.

Its also cost-effective for producers to sell online, Aniceto says. In producing an album, there are a lot of costs involved. If you upload your song in Fliptunes, thats it.

Aniceto says whole albums are also available for download in Fliptunes for P250, which is cheaper compared to paying per song download. Its an incentive for album buyers, he says.

Aniceto adds that Fliptunes asks permission from producers for them to be able to upload songs in their music portal. We have license rights to upload songs for three years, he says, adding that these rights sometimes go on indefinitely.

Revenue generated from song downloads are also shared between Fliptunes and the producers, Aniceto adds.

Songs and videos in Fliptunes are protected through Microsoft Windows Media digital rights management by limiting the number of downloads of a song to three, as well as burning these songs in a CD and copying them to portable music players.

With music now in digital format, songs are easier to store and carry from one place to another. I do not have to carry CDs in my car anymore, Aniceto says.

In the future, maybe more people will be interested in downloading music, he says. But, Aniceto adds, this entails contending with illegal competitors that affect the legitimate business.

People dont realize that if they support the illegal competitors, they are taking away music from the consumers. If you buy from a pirate, everything goes to their pockets, Aniceto says.

The artists

Technology is and always will be a double-edged sword, acoustic band Make Your Momma Proud (MYMP) says. The band recognizes downloading in making their music known, however, they believe that it is also responsible for the decline of the music industry.

These sites are part of the many factors why the music industry is declining, the band claims. Record labels need album sales to stay alive, MYMP says adding: Music downloading is good for the artist because they become popular, but bad for the record labels.

The watcher

Its more of an expression of their coping capacity with poverty, says Gerardo Lanuza, sociologist from the University of the Philippines.

Downloading music democratizes the access, Lanuza says describing the new trend of music downloading. However, he warns that people should not romanticized the term democratizes because it goes with both sides of the coin.

It creates inequalities, he strongly remarks. He argues that downloading sets the division socially and economically speaking. He explains that people with Internet access have absolutely the edge compared to those who are unfortunate enough to avail some online access.

Lanuza foresees the collapse of the music industry as a result of the modernization in music access.

The people

Digital music downloads are just one of the many technologies that allow musicians to bring their music directly to the people. Digital online videos and blogs allow artists to promote themselves globally at little cost. The record labels companies are the middlemen who have been cut out of the new deal. Its power to the artist and power to the people.

No New Posts   MYMP "NOW" Album launch

August 24, 2008

by Jojo Gabinete
Abante Tonight
August 21, 2008

Rosa.

No New Posts   M.Y.M.P. launches its two-year-in-the-making album "Now"

August 21, 2008

M.Y.M.P. (Make Your Momma Proud), the duo which popularized hits like "A Little Bit," "Get Me," "Talaga Naman," to name a few, is officially back in the music scene with an album titled Now.

Juris Fernandez (vocals) and Chin Alcantara (guitar) told the media people last night, August 20, at the Phi Resto Bar in Metrowalk, that their most recent work aptly defines M.Y.M.P.'s brand of music.

Now
has 12 tracks, two of which are original compositions. It still has that acoustic touch of Chin, the album's musical director, plus a feel of "country" music.

Chin related that the country feel just "came naturally." They were listening to Alison Krauss's "Baby, Now That I've Found You" when they realized, "parang ganun din tayo."

The album's carrier single "Now" is an entrancing piece written by Cattski Espinaa talented Cebuana "who writes when she's confronted," that's according to her band Cattski's mySpace account.

Majority of the songs they revivedJohn Waite's "Missing You," Restless Heart's "When She Cries," Step's "Make It Easy On Me," Vonda Shepard's "Baby Don't You Break My Heart Slow," among otherstalks about heartbreaks, but Chin was quick to clarify, "Hindi sadya 'yon."

Parang yung 'Tell Me Where It Hurts' [from the album Beyond Acoustic], nakakaiyak talaga yung lyrics pero naging masaya yung kanta parang ganun...Pero kasi, yun talaga yung forte namin."

For her part, Juris said that their fifth album, which also happens to be the fifth anniversary offering of Ivory Records, is a collaboration between M.Y.M.P. and the new management"from the songs to the concept of the pictures in the album."

When asked if they follow certain tules in terms of choosing the songs, the lead guitarist said, "Hindi namin naiisip yung timpla ng masa. Although, siguro ang guide namin is gusto namin yung kanta, o kaya kinalakihan namin, o kaya hilig namin dati.

"Kasi yung 'I'll Never Get Over You [Getting Over Me],' may meaning sa akin yun dati, naiiyak ako kapag naririnig ko iyan.

Most acoustic singers and groups are no longer active in the recording scene now, but M.Y.M.P. is set to prove that their brand of music is timeless.

"Suwerte kami," Chin said.

And what's new with M.Y.M.P. now?

Fans of M.Y.M.P. waited for two years, and now, it's back...and it's here to stay.

Life despite bossa nova
By BABY GIL

Bossa nova sounds are now the rage and nearly all bossa nova albums in stores both the good and the bad are selling very well. So what will happen now to M.Y.M.P.? We got the answer recently.

The Philippine Star

Is there still room for M.Y.M.P.s tender musings now that Pinoy music buyers have shifted their interest to the Latin rhythm of the bossa nova? This question cropped up when M.Y.M.P. or Make Your Momma Proud released a new album last December. Composed of Juris Fernandez and Chin Alcantara, M.Y.M.P. propelled itself to stardom on the strength of acoustic pop recordings. Thanks to the sweet voice of Juris and Chins guitar, every single they released these past few years became a hit. But times have changed and there is new music in the air lanes.

Bossa nova sounds are now the rage and nearly all bossa nova albums in stores both the good and the bad are selling very well. So what will happen now to M.Y.M.P.? We got the answer recently. Thank heavens, it looks like there is still life for Juris and Chin in the midst of this unforeseen Latin phenomenon. This is because M.Y.M.P.s latest album, New Horizon, has reached gold record status and continues to sell.

If I remember right, this is M.Y.M.P.s first studio album in almost three years. Before this, there was the seven times platinum-selling Versions & Beyond. The last M.Y.M.P. album released though was M.Y.M.P. Juris & Chin Live Especially for You at the Music Museum. This was a two-disc video and audio package with live recorded tracks from the groups successful first solo concert. There were early hits like Talaga Naman and Especially for You and newer materials like Ill Never Get Over You Getting Over Me and Juris show-stopping rendition of Nakapagtataka. Good work.

After listening to New Horizon, I am happy to note that in spite comprising one of the most popular duos in the history of local pop music, Juris and Chin are not sitting on their laurels. New Horizon pretty much sticks to the groups tested formula of light pop acoustic music with a few new original compositions and lots of covers. But they have also introduced interesting developments, which I believe assures them of staying on top in spite of the bossa nova or other music trends.

New Horizon offers more than Juris sweet vocals and Chins guitar-playing. It presents Juris the songwriter armed with four of her works. These are the first single release With You, Sa Yo Lamang, So Perfect and Forever and a Day. The latter has music by Chin, who does more vocals in this album than before. He solos in the Polices Every Breath You Take and duets with Juris in Starships Nothings Gonna Stop Us Now.

This is also the first time M.Y.M.P. recorded with a band. Chin remains the arranger but there is now a band made up of John Angeles on drums and percussion; Oja Ramirez on keyboards and Emil Rivas on bass. The use of a band is probably an indication that M.Y.M.P. is gearing for heavier sounds or at the very least something somewhat different. Maybe the lively Forever and a Day, which reminds me of 70s muzak is probably a step into whatever new directions M.Y.M.P. may decide to take someday.

Come to think of it, M.Y.M.P. music has a lot of similarity with the local version of the bossa. Just perk up the percussion and they will be almost the same. So I will not be surprised if I hear Juris singing A Certain Sadness one of these days. And she will sound better than other girl bossa singers we have these days.

Other cuts in New Horizon are more Filipino compositions like Love Stood Still, Ang Pag-ibig Mo and Back Home plus covers of Only Reminds Me of You, You Got It All, Crazy for You and the best of the lot, Mariah Careys Last Chance.

Juris and Chin, pinuno ang Big Dome... Jano, MYMP din

by: Allan Diones
NOvember 21, 2005

Applauded ang duet nina Janno at Juris ng If Im Not In Love.

CAPTIVATINGLY CLEAR
From:Juris Fernandez

You hear her voice on the airwaves, clear, crisp and, oh, so honest. Captivated, you find yourself singing along with her and craving to hear more. So whos this lady with a captivating voice? Sweet, petite, down-to-earth and unassuming, chances are youve seen her in the malls or stood in-line beside her at your favorite theaters ticketing booth. The lady is Juris Fernandez, lead vocalist of MYMP or Make Your Momma Proud --- the countrys most sought after acoustic band.

An Unlikely Singer

Juris never joined any singing contest --- never, ever. She was more than happy studying and staying home, preferring the company of family and long-known friends, to going out weekend nights. I was and still am a homebody Juris claims.

She never took formal singing lessons; and just like you and me, she only sang in the shower. So how did this simple, homebody end up as lead vocalist for MYMP? I started really late Juris explains. It wasnt until college that I started going out to listen and watch bands. That was in Manila, where she stayed to study BS Psychology. It wasnt until her 4th-yr college though, that Juris was asked by schoolmate and friend Chin Alcantara to help out in a band. Juris consented; then soon declined. The late night performances coupled with early morning school was too much for this petite vocalist. Filipinos had to wait a little longer to hear her angelic voice.

Med School vs Singing Career

After graduating with a BS in Psychology, Juris enrolled again to take more subjects in preparation for Medical school. At the same time, Chin once more invited her as back-up and filler in some of the bands gigs. A gig here, a gig there, another one and another one. It came to the point where Juris had to choose between pursuing her dream of becoming a doctor and stretching herself in trying something entirely new. She chose the latter.

More Besides

Its been 6 years since she made that decision and Juris admits that there were some difficulties. One of the biggest difficulties was having to dress-up and perform in a show band says Juris. I had to dress up for the part, learn a few dance steps and most trying of all, I had to wear make-up. My eyes are very sensitive and so make-up irritated my eyes and made them itchy. Id scratch them red, which only made the condition worse. Wearing prescription glasses is alright, but not when youre a performer; I couldnt wear glasses in our shows. It was alright up to a point --- till the time came when I couldnt see what was written in the prompter. So I resorted to wearing contact lenses. But that didnt help too as my eyes dried up when we performed. It got worse as my eyes were always tired from sleeping late.

Clarification Please

My eyes were a real problem for me and so I was glad when a friend told me about laser eye surgery. I did my own research, inquired around until friends recommended FatimaEyeLaserCenter. They have the latest and most advanced technology, the Carl Zeiss Mel 80 Excimer Laser --- a mouthful, but that is the latest technology available in the world market. It has the PrecisePulse Technology that assures every beam of laser energy is placed precisely on the cornea to ensure the best possible outcome. I was scared to take the procedure but the doctors explained everything in detail to me: In Lasik surgery, a high-precision beam sculpts the cornea to correct the curvature so that images are sharply focused on the retina. The Lasek, PRK and Epi-Lasik procedures are alternatives to Lasik. In Lasek, PRK and Epi-Lasik, the cornea isnt cut; instead the uppermost layer of the cornea is temporarily removed.

The procedure is precise, fast and safe; ideal for me as I have schedules to keep and cant really take time-off from work. I have my regular shows, my studies --- Im taking 6 units for my Masters --- and rehearsals. In fact, I have to rehearse for our up-coming Valentines show. All in all, Im glad I went with FatimaEyeLaserCenter as they took really good care of me and did excellent work with my eyes! No need for glasses or contact lenses, no drying, so no irritation; everything is crystal clear for me. Call them and theyll help you out: 291-2020; or you could visit their website: www.fatimaeyelaser.com.

Chart-Topping Acoustics

By Christian Bautista

Becoming one of the unforeseen flag bearers of the bustling acoustic music scene, MYMP has been enjoying tremendous success as of late. The band, which recently released a live album called Versions, garnered a gold record distinction in less than a month.

As a result of the album's commercial success, MYMP, which is composed of vocalist Juris Fernandez and guitarist Chin Alcantara, has been duly recognized in this year's Awards, being nominated for Best-Selling Album of the Year. PULP recently caught up with the soft-spoken Fernandez, who reveals the triumphs and transitions she has experienced with the band.

Where did you get the band's name? Sa gitarista namin, si Chin. It's for his mom who died noong seventeen siya.

How did the band make the transition from a four-piece, all-male rock band to a pop duo? After rock, nag-shift sila to pop music.

How did you get started in music? Most of my knowledge in singing sa sarili ko lang. Talagang nag-concentrate ako doon after college na.

How do you go about writing songs?

What kind of music do you listen to? Halo-halo naman eh, no one in particular.

Why did you decide to get new members?

Which do you prefer, a complete band set-up or just you and a guitarist? Kahit ano.

What has changed since you hit it big? Dumagdag siyempre 'yung trabaho namin, so lesser time rin na makapag-pahinga. 'Yung oras na wala kaming trabaho talagang inagamit namin.

What can people expect from your next album?
Gusto namin sana by this time, we'll try to make all-original songs. Kasi both our albums, halo eh, original tsaka revival. So, kung kaya namin lahat ng songs kami gagawa, better. Siyempre accomplishment 'yun na you can make your own songs and ma-release siya.

Not too many musicians, musical bands, or concert artists/performers have been able to fill up the 3,000-seat Lamberto Macias Sports & Cultural Center but for the soul-acoustic music band MYMP, it was a breeze.

Organized by the FU Alumni Association Inc. headed by Dinno T. Depositario, the MYMP duo of vocalist Juris Fernandez and guitarist Chin Alcantara jampacked the stadium with almost 3,000 screaming fans, including Koreans students.

The Feb. 8 concert was a pre-Valentine treat dubbed Come F.U. Are in Love.

The duo, together with their band, wowed the audience as Juris sang heart-warming radio favorites Especially for You, Crazy for You, Sa Kanya, Get Me, No Ordinary Love, and Magical Feeling.

In an interview with Muffet Villegas on DYFU Greyhound 101, Chin explained they agreed on the name MYMP with stands for Make Your Momma Proud. He said they wanted the youth like them to pay tribute to the mothers who do so much for their children.

Juris explained she chose to pursue a singing career for her sheer love of music even after earning a degree in psychology. The various reviews on her singing rendition have since revolved around the descriptions honest, smooth, and sweet.

Their song A Little Bit bagged the People's Choice Favorite Song in the Awit Awards three years ago. Their recently released albums Beyong Acoustic and Versions were have been warmly accepted by their fans. Versions was recently declared Certified Gold Record after less than a month in the market.

The production and marketing of the concert of the MYMP Live in Dumaguete was headed by Donna Aguilar, director of the FU Alumni Relations office, and Michelle Valencia-Shirley of the Office of Student Life & External Affairs.

The MYMP Concert in Dumaguete was sponsored by Sharman Air / Air Philippines, Globe Telecoms, Teletech, Coco Grande, Airconman, MetroPost, Scooby's, and Shakey's.

No New Posts   "MYMP at the Pinoy Musik Festival"

April 30, 2008

YOU wont have to wait for weekend radio programs to hear your favorite love songs from yesteryears. All you have to do is to watch a gig of Make Your Momma Proud or MYMP.

This award-winning quintet from the Philippines has certainly made their mommas proud by injecting new life to the timeless hits that we love. Armed with Juris Hernandez angelic voice and Chin Alcantaras soulful rhythms, MYMP re-made these classics for the younger generation to love.

Their career took off when they were discovered by Raymond Ryan, station manager of Philippine radio station iFM 93.9, in one of their early gigs. Eventually, it was also Ryan who helped the band produce their first album, Soulful Acoustic, which went on to platinum status.

And to prove that their initial success is no fluke, their 2005 double-disc record entitled Versions and Beyond was very much embraced by Filipino music lovers that it garnered a seven-time platinum recognition.

This success also made them one of the most sought after commercial jingle composers in the country. Though they are relatively a young band, they have already made beats for Hortaleza Beauty Center, Jollibee, Nescafe and Jam 88.3.

They have also been recognized by the top award-giving bodies in the Philippines. They were named as the Best Acoustic Act in the 2004 SOP Awards and Most Popular Recording Group in the 2006 Box Office Entertainment Awards.

Of course, hearing their records is good enough. But, your MYMP experience will not be complete once youve seen them perform. They are an amiable group of individuals who want nothing less than a great acoustic session and the simplicity of their harmonies have made them into one of the most likable bands in the Philippines.

Also, listening to their songs will give you a mixed feeling of nostalgia and freshness. They have made a reggae song Waiting In Vain into a heartfelt track that is still making rounds in Philippine radio stations. Also, they have added a manly flavor to Tracy Chapmans Fast Car. And last but not the least, Chin did a good job in remaking the piano-heavy song Beauty and Madness into an acoustic masterpiece.

Say all you want about them raking success by just rehashing songs. But once youve watched them take the stage, you will discover that they have paid tribute to those great musicians while making these songs as if it was theirs. And with the way things are going for them, its hard to imagine whether their greatness will ever wilt.

They have taken the Philippine music industry by storm and so it is time for you to check them out and have a wonderful night of music as Juris serenades you while Chin lets his guitar weep. So be treated with the kind of acoustic music only MYMP can produce. And once youve started it, their soothing melodies will make you listen to them more often. And with that in mind, it could be an addiction that will make your momma proud as well.

Watch MYMP perform at the 2008 Pinoy Musik Festival on May 17-18 at the Meadowlands Expo Center, Secaucus, New Jersey . For more information, please contact 212-682-6610 or email at sepmgzn@aol.com, visit www.pinoymusikfestival.com.

No New Posts   "MYMP Gets The Big Treatment"

April 30, 2008

by Ivory Music
March 25, 2005

Ivory Music & Video drops a big one this time as it releases 3 new albums from the breakout duo of the 2004! MYMP - Make Your Momma Proud has two new albums entitled "Beyond Acoustic" "Versions" And the double CD combo "Versions & Beyond".

First off, Beyond Acoustic is the official follow-up to the platinum selling Soulful Acoustic..."Beyond..." is carried on by the first single entitled "Get Me"... this song takes MYMP inches away from their usual "acoustic" set-up as additional instruments are used to beef up their sound. But the trademark voice of Juris Fernandez is as crisp and clear as ever...melodic, light and refreshingly different are just a few words that can be used to describe this track. Other highlights of the Beyond Acoustic album are remakes of "Tell Me Where It
Hurts " (an obvious folow-up to Get Me) and "Sa Kanya." Of equal importance of course, if not more are the original materials that Juris and Chin of MYMP has come up with for this album.. .this includes "Jam (set your spirits free)" , "Magical Feeling" and the reggae-ish number "Would You Be My Girlfriend."

The second album is entitled "Versions" simply put, versions is a special CD for the MYMP fan. MYMP owes, in large, part the many udiences that has seen them in countless bars and concert places that has then bought and made their first album a platinum seller. So as a thank you for those fans whos has been asking constantly for copies of their "versions" of their favorite MYMP cover song, this album is for them... Versions is a 12 track CD that contains your favorite MYMP cover song... True Colors, Especially For You, Constantly, At Your Best
and more...this is MYMP's way of thanking those who bought the first album.

The third album is a double CD that contains all the tracks from Beyond Acoustic and Versions... for lack of a better title, this album is called "Versions & Beyond" this album is a specially priced CD. a discounted value as compared to buying the first two seperately... This double CD set contains 24 tracks.

This is a big one...this hasn't been done in a long while... and who better to deserve it than the newest and hottest acoustic duo around?

All 3 albums are available on CDs and cassettes at record stores nationwide and online via Titik Pilipino, released under Ivory Music.

No New Posts   "Juris and Chin of the MYMP, newest mainstay of ASAP 2006 Mania"

April 30, 2008

MANILA, January 19, 2006 (MALAYA) ENTERTAINMENT NEWS (by ETHEL RAMOS)

Juris and Chin of the MYMP (a.k.a. Make Your Mama Proud) are the newest main stays of ABS-CBNs "ASAP 2006 Mania." This recent development in their singing career is another addition to their long list of achievements which include being named as the best selling artist for 2005. MYMP is the only local act to be honored with a sixtuple platinum award (six times platinum) for their album "Version& Beyond." The album contains most of their hits like "Get Me," "Tell Me Where It Hurts," "Especially for You" and "Talaga Naman."

The long-running Sunday musical show along with its top performers and hosts officially welcomed MYMP last Sunday. The duo had an extravagant production number with mainstays Zsa Zsa Padilla, Vina Morales, Piolo Pascual and Nikki Gil.

In the show, Juris and Chin sang their latest single, "Ill Never Get Over You," from their latest album, a concert video, produced by Ivory Music. The album is a collection of the songs they performed in their major concert last October at the Music Museum.

MYMP is currently preparing for a repeat concert of "MYMP Best," held last November 18 at the Araneta Coliseum. It will be staged again at the Big Dome on February 3.

The duo is also preparing for their first US tour slated on March 29 to April 20.

Juris and Chin are both products of Miriam College. Juris finished a degree in Psychology while Chin is still completing nine units of his Advertising course.

When Juris learned to sing the song, "Tomorrow" at five years old, she knew then that singing will always be a part of her. But she knew, too, that like her mom, an obstetrician, she will become a doctor someday. That was the dream of her parents for her. That was also the reason why she took up Psychology.

Chin, on the other hand, described himself as a late bloomer. He learned how to sing when he was 17, the same age when he discovered his passion for guitar playing.

Juris was a popular figure in their school as she was actively involved in various school programs. One day, when Juris was asked to sing, she refused to have a minus one for an accompaniment. So, they had to look for a guitarist, who turned out to be Chin.

When their paths crossed then, he had already coined the name Make Your Mama Proud which was shortened to MYMP in memory of his late mom.

They have been together for sometime. But the two have never been romantically linked. Both think that its impossible since Chin has a girlfriend while Juris just broke up with her boyfriend. Right now, shes entertaining a manliligaw, a businessman.

Juris is 27, while Chin admitted his age is burado na in the calendar.

No New Posts   "MYMP explains continued estrangement with ex-member"

April 30, 2008

By JOJO PANALIGAN

"He says one thing to us then another publicly so better to not revive the friendship."

This was explanation given by MYMPs Chin Guitierrez as to why he and Juris Fernandez (other half of MYMP) have refused to respond to text messages from ex-MYMP member Michael Manahan who hopes to reconcile with the two.

Michael left MYMP shortly after he broke off with then-girlfriend Juris and before the now acoustic sensation hit it big with their recent multi-platinum albums, "Versions And Beyond."

On allegations that MYMP had Michaels friends banned from Bagaberde, Chin clarified that this decision MYMP did not influence.

"Its true that his friends were banned ------but not by our instigation," Chin says. "It was Bagaberdes manager who imposed it because it was he who heard Michaels friends insulting and laughing at Juris while watching one of our shows. They called Juris cheap and pangit and, of course, our Bagaberde manager-friend was sympathetic to us."

He continues: "Okay, so maybe it wasnt Michael himself who made comments about Juris then. But since they are his friends, he couldve done something about it by telling them off or at least not laughing along with them. What they did wasnt right."

Chin also says that Michael never spoke about the incident with Juris that night contrary to what the former had said during a recent interview.

"In fact, Juris would never have known she was object of insult if the sister of Michaels girlfriend, who was already tipsy then, did not corner her in the parking lot. My sister saw them and went up to the scene to defend Juris who had maintained her cool all through out the episode. But, no, Juris and Michael did not speak that night. Never."

On Michaels insinuations that it was he, Chin, who was letting the band down before by arriving late often to rehearsals and shows, Chin let out a mouthful.

"I dont deny that I sometimes have problems in arriving promptly. But at least I dont let the musicianship of the band suffer by staying out late the night before a show or rehearsal to the point na pumipiyok na ako pag kumakanta in front of people or sumasablay na sa pagtugtog ng instrumento."

He adds: "And its not as if walang nakakapansin; not as if hindi din namin siya pinagsabihan. We gave him enough reminders to clean up his act kasi nga we were promoting our first album then. But did he take our reminders seriously? No."

Does MYMP really has this rule to not accept any gig that Michaels new band is also part of?

"Before, oo, kasi we dont want those gigs to become a contest between our bands. Ang gina-gawa kasi ni Michael pag may show na magkasama kami, he texts friends to this effect: Punta kayo kasi kasabay namin ang MYMP.

Chin avers that they go overboard with this rule. He cites the recent album launch of Michaels band in "A.S.A.P." where MYMP is regular featured act.

"Nagbatian naman kami backstage and I even congratulated him on their album. Ganun naman kami pag nagkikita kaya nakakasama ng loob when he tells us one thing and then we hear a different version of what happened between us from others. But its okay: We know that truth will come out in the end. Its better to not be close with him."

(MYMP is one of the special guests in "Silver: The Songs of Vehnee Saturno" on May 26 at the Araneta Coliseum where they will be doing an acoustic version of Sarah Geronimo hit songs written by the famed songwriter. Joining MYMP in paying tribute to Vehnee are Jay-R, Rachelle Ann-Go, Mark Bautista, Martin Nievera, Jaya, The CompanY, Jessa Zaragoza, Dingdong Avanzado, Louie Heredia and Randy Santiago.)

No New Posts   "Juris, ok lang ikumpara kay Nina"

April 30, 2008

May mga nang-iintriga kina Juris Fernandez (ng MYMP, Make Your Momma Proud) at Nina.

He! He! He!

***

No New Posts   "Juris ayaw mag-solo"

November 10, 2007

Kanya-kanyang panahon lang yan," said Juris.

"Mabuti yon at nakaka-inspire ako sa ibang singers," she said.

Hindi ma-imagine ni Juris na magso-solo siya at mas gusto niyang kasama si Chin (Jacques Alcantara), her working partner sa MYMP (Make Your Momma Proud). The dynamic duo has been singing together since 2001 at klik na klik ang kanilang tandem, kahit na in real life ay may kanya-kanya silang love and inspiration na parehong non-showbiz.

"New Horizon" is a 13-track album na ang carrier single ay "Without You," composed by Juris. Her two other compositions are "Sa Yo Lamang" (perfect wedding theme) and "So Perfect." Composition naman nila ni Chin ang "Forever and a Day." Among other cuts are "Only Reminds Me of You," "Nothings Gonna Stop Us Now," "Love Stood Still," "Last Chance," "Crazy for You."

No New Posts   "Korina and M.Y.M.P.: Love at first hearing"

November 10, 2007

FUNFARE By Ricardo F. Lo
The Philippine Star 09/06/2006

It was love at first hearing.

As Korina Sanchez recalled, she fell in love with M.Y.M.P. (Make Your Momma Proud) duo Juris and Chin a few years ago when they sang Ill Never Get Over You Getting Over Me on her and Kris Aquinos show Morning Girls with Kris and Korina.

"They were only starting then," related Korina, "but Juris and Chin sang that song with so much feeling that I became their instant fan."

Not long after that, M.Y.M.P. continued to win more hearts with their sentimental (and, may I add, "unhysterical") style of singing, with their beautifully-blended voices, rising over and above the ear-splitting sound of bands and creating their own exclusive niche on the music scene.

"I was impresssed all the more when I learned that they drew SRO crowds during their two concerts at the Araneta Coliseum," added Korina, "with many of their fans reported to be jumping over the bakod in a scramble to get in ahead of the others."

Thats why Korina and bosom friend Vivian Sarabia gladly joined the creative team of the group which is producing the M.Y.M.P.s Sentimental Tour (of four cities around the country) when they were told that the M.Y.M.P. was topbilling it.

"I can listen to them sing Ill Never Get Over You Getting Over Me over and over again without getting tired of it," said Korina.

Asked why, she said half-jokingly, "It hits a soft spot in my heart. You see, ilang beses na akong iniwanan ng boyfriend. Well, mayroon din naman akong iniwanan and what I know is that nagsisisi silang lahat."

Dared to name names, Korina begged off. Suffice it to say that she and her boyfriend, Sen. Mar Roxas, have been happy together for four years now (their "anniversary" falls on May 21, birthday of Nora Aunor), never mind if they havent set a wedding date yet.

Vivian ("Eyewear Stylist to the Stars") has been an M.Y.M.P. fan herself way back when she heard the duo sang Especially For You (original by Kylie Minogue, a cancer survivor like Vivian).

"Tinamaan ako where it should," said the sentimental Vivian, pointing to her heart. "Matindi!"

By coincidence, one of M.Y.M.P.s most-requested songs hits people bulls-eye in the heart. Yes, Tell Me Where It Hurts, which should be included in their Sentimental Tour repertoire (plus the songs theyve been singing in their past concerts and selections from their new album).

Juris and Chin have just come back from their successful first US concert tour that covered San Francisco, San Jose, San Diego and Los Angeles in California; Las Vegas, Nevada; Chicago; and New York.

I know for a fact that the duos New York concert last Sept. 23, produced by Baby Lantin, was sold out weeks earlier.

"At first," Baby told Funfare, "I was a bit worried because the M.Y.M.P. hadnt proven themselves yet in the US concert scene. They are different from other artists who perform as they sing. I mean, they are all over the stage entertaining the audience with more than just singing. The M.Y.M.P. is a mellow kind of artists. Kumakanta lang talaga sila."

But Babys worries vanished when tickets sold like pre-paid cellphone loads.

"Their concert was successful," said Baby. "Everybody went home happy after enjoying a different kind of concert."

Commented Mario Bautista, "I like the M.Y.M.P. because, unlike some singers, they dont scream; they simply sing. Its very relaxing listening to them."

Guesting on the M.Y.M.P.s Sentimental Tour is Nyoy Volante who said he can perform with the duo "spontaneously" even without rehearsing.

"I can jam with Juris and Chin anytime, anywhere," said Nyoy who denied rumors that he and Jimmy Bondoc are having a misunderstanding over Nina, Jimmys "ex" and Nyoys "current."

"Before I courted Nina," said Nyoy, "I first asked Jimmys permission. Jimmy and I are still friends."

(Note: The M.Y.M.P. Sentimental Tour will be staged on Oct. 3 at the CPU Gym in Iloilo City; Oct. 14 at the De La Salle Gym, Bacolod City; Oct. 20 at the Folk Arts Theater in Manila; and Oct. 28 at the Waterfront Hotel Ballroom, Cebu City. Showtime is 8 p.m. Tickets are available at Ticketworld outlets or call/text 0918-4216160 or 0921-4123257; Cebu at 0917-6271800; Bacolod at 0920-9475161; and Iloilo at 0917-6222622.)
