So, nag-try lang ako.
After I graduated, nag-take na ako ng mga science courses, eh.
"Ayy! Wala! Magkaibigan lang kami!"
Paano kung ligawan siya ni Chin?
"Ayoko! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha!"
Bakit ayaw niyang magpaligaw kay Chin?
"Wala lang! Kasi, wala talaga. Brotherly lang talaga. At saka, wala talaga, eh! Ha! Ha! Ha!

Technology and the failing music industry |
By Joy Festin and Katherine Lopez, Special to The Manila Times May 20, 2008 Digital downloads are the future of the music industry. In the US, 48 percent of teenagers did not purchase a single CD in 2007and 37 percent of consumers own an iPod or other brand of portable MP3 player. Researchers predicts that by 2011, 50 percent of music sold will be digital. In January 2008, Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple, stated that his companys iTunes Music Store has accounted for more than 70 percent of worldwide online digital music sales. Warner Music Group chairman Edgar Bronfman Jr. has stated that Apples iTunes was the download model and its iPodwhich necessitates the iTunes softwareis the default device. However, the iTunes store has yet to be made available to citizens of the Philippines. Digital downloadsbe it through peer-to-peer file sharing (most often illegally without payment) or through legal online purchasesrequire Internet access. Online purchases, especially from international institutions, most often require credit card ownership. According to AC Neilsen, 4.5 million Filipinos out of a total population of 76.5 million have Internet access. The Credit Card Association of the Philippines estimates around 4.6 million Filipino credit card holders. The absence of the iTunes Store in the local market and other factors have created opportunities for several Filipino Internet companies that offer digital music downloads. Some offer alternative payment schemes such as pre-paid cards and automated teller machine transactions for non-credit cardholders. These companies also have created a niche market by offering Filipino music. The seller Fliptunes is just one of the many sites for downloading music. It is a music portal that retails music online. Customers can download songs from Fliptunes from P30 to P40 each. Videos can also be downloaded for P80 each. The music industry today has changed dramatically, says Ronald Aniceto, president of Fliptunes Inc. Generally, people download for convenience. Instead of going out, you can just browse through the 70,000 songs in our collection. Its also cost-effective for producers to sell online, Aniceto says. In producing an album, there are a lot of costs involved. If you upload your song in Fliptunes, thats it. Aniceto says whole albums are also available for download in Fliptunes for P250, which is cheaper compared to paying per song download. Its an incentive for album buyers, he says. Aniceto adds that Fliptunes asks permission from producers for them to be able to upload songs in their music portal. We have license rights to upload songs for three years, he says, adding that these rights sometimes go on indefinitely. Revenue generated from song downloads are also shared between Fliptunes and the producers, Aniceto adds. Songs and videos in Fliptunes are protected through Microsoft Windows Media digital rights management by limiting the number of downloads of a song to three, as well as burning these songs in a CD and copying them to portable music players. With music now in digital format, songs are easier to store and carry from one place to another. I do not have to carry CDs in my car anymore, Aniceto says. In the future, maybe more people will be interested in downloading music, he says. But, Aniceto adds, this entails contending with illegal competitors that affect the legitimate business. People dont realize that if they support the illegal competitors, they are taking away music from the consumers. If you buy from a pirate, everything goes to their pockets, Aniceto says. The artists Technology is and always will be a double-edged sword, acoustic band Make Your Momma Proud (MYMP) says. The band recognizes downloading in making their music known, however, they believe that it is also responsible for the decline of the music industry. These sites are part of the many factors why the music industry is declining, the band claims. Record labels need album sales to stay alive, MYMP says adding: Music downloading is good for the artist because they become popular, but bad for the record labels. The watcher Its more of an expression of their coping capacity with poverty, says Gerardo Lanuza, sociologist from the University of the Philippines. Downloading music democratizes the access, Lanuza says describing the new trend of music downloading. However, he warns that people should not romanticized the term democratizes because it goes with both sides of the coin. It creates inequalities, he strongly remarks. He argues that downloading sets the division socially and economically speaking. He explains that people with Internet access have absolutely the edge compared to those who are unfortunate enough to avail some online access. Lanuza foresees the collapse of the music industry as a result of the modernization in music access. The people Digital music downloads are just one of the many technologies that allow musicians to bring their music directly to the people. Digital online videos and blogs allow artists to promote themselves globally at little cost. The record labels companies are the middlemen who have been cut out of the new deal. Its power to the artist and power to the people. Reference Link: http://www.manilatimes.net/national/2008/may/20/yehey/life/20080520lif2.html |

M.Y.M.P. (Make Your Momma Proud), the duo which popularized hits like "A Little Bit," "Get Me," "Talaga Naman," to name a few, is officially back in the music scene with an album titled Now.
Juris Fernandez (vocals) and Chin Alcantara (guitar) told the media people last night, August 20, at the Phi Resto Bar in Metrowalk, that their most recent work aptly defines M.Y.M.P.'s brand of music.
Now has 12 tracks, two of which are original compositions. It still has that acoustic touch of Chin, the album's musical director, plus a feel of "country" music.
Chin related that the country feel just "came naturally." They were listening to Alison Krauss's "Baby, Now That I've Found You" when they realized, "parang ganun din tayo."
The album's carrier single "Now" is an entrancing piece written by Cattski Espinaa talented Cebuana "who writes when she's confronted," that's according to her band Cattski's mySpace account.
Majority of the songs they revivedJohn Waite's "Missing You," Restless Heart's "When She Cries," Step's "Make It Easy On Me," Vonda Shepard's "Baby Don't You Break My Heart Slow," among otherstalks about heartbreaks, but Chin was quick to clarify, "Hindi sadya 'yon."
Parang yung 'Tell Me Where It Hurts' [from the album Beyond Acoustic], nakakaiyak talaga yung lyrics pero naging masaya yung kanta parang ganun...Pero kasi, yun talaga yung forte namin."
For her part, Juris said that their fifth album, which also happens to be the fifth anniversary offering of Ivory Records, is a collaboration between M.Y.M.P. and the new management"from the songs to the concept of the pictures in the album."
When asked if they follow certain tules in terms of choosing the songs, the lead guitarist said, "Hindi namin naiisip yung timpla ng masa. Although, siguro ang guide namin is gusto namin yung kanta, o kaya kinalakihan namin, o kaya hilig namin dati.
"Kasi yung 'I'll Never Get Over You [Getting Over Me],' may meaning sa akin yun dati, naiiyak ako kapag naririnig ko iyan.
Most acoustic singers and groups are no longer active in the recording scene now, but M.Y.M.P. is set to prove that their brand of music is timeless.
"Suwerte kami," Chin said.
And what's new with M.Y.M.P. now?
Fans of M.Y.M.P. waited for two years, and now, it's back...and it's here to stay.

Juris and Chin, pinuno ang Big Dome...
Applauded ang duet nina Janno at Juris ng If Im Not In Love.

CAPTIVATINGLY CLEAR
From:Juris Fernandez
You hear her voice on the airwaves, clear, crisp and, oh, so honest. Captivated, you find yourself singing along with her and craving to hear more. So whos this lady with a captivating voice? Sweet, petite, down-to-earth and unassuming, chances are youve seen her in the malls or stood in-line beside her at your favorite theaters ticketing booth. The lady is Juris Fernandez, lead vocalist of MYMP or Make Your Momma Proud --- the countrys most sought after acoustic band.
An Unlikely Singer
Juris never joined any singing contest --- never, ever. She was more than happy studying and staying home, preferring the company of family and long-known friends, to going out weekend nights. I was and still am a homebody Juris claims.
She never took formal singing lessons; and just like you and me, she only sang in the shower. So how did this simple, homebody end up as lead vocalist for MYMP? I started really late Juris explains. It wasnt until college that I started going out to listen and watch bands. That was in Manila, where she stayed to study BS Psychology. It wasnt until her 4th-yr college though, that Juris was asked by schoolmate and friend Chin Alcantara to help out in a band. Juris consented; then soon declined. The late night performances coupled with early morning school was too much for this petite vocalist. Filipinos had to wait a little longer to hear her angelic voice.
Med School vs Singing Career
After graduating with a BS in Psychology, Juris enrolled again to take more subjects in preparation for Medical school. At the same time, Chin once more invited her as back-up and filler in some of the bands gigs. A gig here, a gig there, another one and another one. It came to the point where Juris had to choose between pursuing her dream of becoming a doctor and stretching herself in trying something entirely new. She chose the latter.
More Besides
Its been 6 years since she made that decision and Juris admits that there were some difficulties. One of the biggest difficulties was having to dress-up and perform in a show band says Juris. I had to dress up for the part, learn a few dance steps and most trying of all, I had to wear make-up. My eyes are very sensitive and so make-up irritated my eyes and made them itchy. Id scratch them red, which only made the condition worse. Wearing prescription glasses is alright, but not when youre a performer; I couldnt wear glasses in our shows. It was alright up to a point --- till the time came when I couldnt see what was written in the prompter. So I resorted to wearing contact lenses. But that didnt help too as my eyes dried up when we performed. It got worse as my eyes were always tired from sleeping late.
Clarification Please
My eyes were a real problem for me and so I was glad when a friend told me about laser eye surgery. I did my own research, inquired around until friends recommended FatimaEyeLaserCenter. They have the latest and most advanced technology, the Carl Zeiss Mel 80 Excimer Laser --- a mouthful, but that is the latest technology available in the world market. It has the PrecisePulse Technology that assures every beam of laser energy is placed precisely on the cornea to ensure the best possible outcome. I was scared to take the procedure but the doctors explained everything in detail to me: In Lasik surgery, a high-precision beam sculpts the cornea to correct the curvature so that images are sharply focused on the retina. The Lasek, PRK and Epi-Lasik procedures are alternatives to Lasik. In Lasek, PRK and Epi-Lasik, the cornea isnt cut; instead the uppermost layer of the cornea is temporarily removed.
The procedure is precise, fast and safe; ideal for me as I have schedules to keep and cant really take time-off from work. I have my regular shows, my studies --- Im taking 6 units for my Masters --- and rehearsals. In fact, I have to rehearse for our up-coming Valentines show. All in all, Im glad I went with FatimaEyeLaserCenter as they took really good care of me and did excellent work with my eyes! No need for glasses or contact lenses, no drying, so no irritation; everything is crystal clear for me. Call them and theyll help you out: 291-2020; or you could visit their website: www.fatimaeyelaser.com.

MANILA, January 19, 2006 (MALAYA) ENTERTAINMENT NEWS (by ETHEL RAMOS)Juris and Chin of the MYMP (a.k.a. Make Your Mama Proud) are the newest main stays of ABS-CBNs "ASAP 2006 Mania." This recent development in their singing career is another addition to their long list of achievements which include being named as the best selling artist for 2005. MYMP is the only local act to be honored with a sixtuple platinum award (six times platinum) for their album "Version& Beyond." The album contains most of their hits like "Get Me," "Tell Me Where It Hurts," "Especially for You" and "Talaga Naman."
The long-running Sunday musical show along with its top performers and hosts officially welcomed MYMP last Sunday. The duo had an extravagant production number with mainstays Zsa Zsa Padilla, Vina Morales, Piolo Pascual and Nikki Gil.
In the show, Juris and Chin sang their latest single, "Ill Never Get Over You," from their latest album, a concert video, produced by Ivory Music. The album is a collection of the songs they performed in their major concert last October at the Music Museum.
MYMP is currently preparing for a repeat concert of "MYMP Best," held last November 18 at the Araneta Coliseum. It will be staged again at the Big Dome on February 3.
The duo is also preparing for their first US tour slated on March 29 to April 20.
Juris and Chin are both products of Miriam College. Juris finished a degree in Psychology while Chin is still completing nine units of his Advertising course.
When Juris learned to sing the song, "Tomorrow" at five years old, she knew then that singing will always be a part of her. But she knew, too, that like her mom, an obstetrician, she will become a doctor someday. That was the dream of her parents for her. That was also the reason why she took up Psychology.
Chin, on the other hand, described himself as a late bloomer. He learned how to sing when he was 17, the same age when he discovered his passion for guitar playing.
Juris was a popular figure in their school as she was actively involved in various school programs. One day, when Juris was asked to sing, she refused to have a minus one for an accompaniment. So, they had to look for a guitarist, who turned out to be Chin.
When their paths crossed then, he had already coined the name Make Your Mama Proud which was shortened to MYMP in memory of his late mom.
They have been together for sometime. But the two have never been romantically linked. Both think that its impossible since Chin has a girlfriend while Juris just broke up with her boyfriend. Right now, shes entertaining a manliligaw, a businessman.
Juris is 27, while Chin admitted his age is burado na in the calendar.

By JOJO PANALIGANThis was explanation given by MYMPs Chin Guitierrez as to why he and Juris Fernandez (other half of MYMP) have refused to respond to text messages from ex-MYMP member Michael Manahan who hopes to reconcile with the two.
Michael left MYMP shortly after he broke off with then-girlfriend Juris and before the now acoustic sensation hit it big with their recent multi-platinum albums, "Versions And Beyond."
On allegations that MYMP had Michaels friends banned from Bagaberde, Chin clarified that this decision MYMP did not influence.
"Its true that his friends were banned ------but not by our instigation," Chin says. "It was Bagaberdes manager who imposed it because it was he who heard Michaels friends insulting and laughing at Juris while watching one of our shows. They called Juris cheap and pangit and, of course, our Bagaberde manager-friend was sympathetic to us."
He continues: "Okay, so maybe it wasnt Michael himself who made comments about Juris then. But since they are his friends, he couldve done something about it by telling them off or at least not laughing along with them. What they did wasnt right."
Chin also says that Michael never spoke about the incident with Juris that night contrary to what the former had said during a recent interview.
"In fact, Juris would never have known she was object of insult if the sister of Michaels girlfriend, who was already tipsy then, did not corner her in the parking lot. My sister saw them and went up to the scene to defend Juris who had maintained her cool all through out the episode. But, no, Juris and Michael did not speak that night. Never."
On Michaels insinuations that it was he, Chin, who was letting the band down before by arriving late often to rehearsals and shows, Chin let out a mouthful.
"I dont deny that I sometimes have problems in arriving promptly. But at least I dont let the musicianship of the band suffer by staying out late the night before a show or rehearsal to the point na pumipiyok na ako pag kumakanta in front of people or sumasablay na sa pagtugtog ng instrumento."
He adds: "And its not as if walang nakakapansin; not as if hindi din namin siya pinagsabihan. We gave him enough reminders to clean up his act kasi nga we were promoting our first album then. But did he take our reminders seriously? No."
Does MYMP really has this rule to not accept any gig that Michaels new band is also part of?
"Before, oo, kasi we dont want those gigs to become a contest between our bands. Ang gina-gawa kasi ni Michael pag may show na magkasama kami, he texts friends to this effect: Punta kayo kasi kasabay namin ang MYMP.
Chin avers that they go overboard with this rule. He cites the recent album launch of Michaels band in "A.S.A.P." where MYMP is regular featured act.
"Nagbatian naman kami backstage and I even congratulated him on their album. Ganun naman kami pag nagkikita kaya nakakasama ng loob when he tells us one thing and then we hear a different version of what happened between us from others. But its okay: We know that truth will come out in the end. Its better to not be close with him."
(MYMP is one of the special guests in "Silver: The Songs of Vehnee Saturno" on May 26 at the Araneta Coliseum where they will be doing an acoustic version of Sarah Geronimo hit songs written by the famed songwriter. Joining MYMP in paying tribute to Vehnee are Jay-R, Rachelle Ann-Go, Mark Bautista, Martin Nievera, Jaya, The CompanY, Jessa Zaragoza, Dingdong Avanzado, Louie Heredia and Randy Santiago.)

May mga nang-iintriga kina Juris Fernandez (ng MYMP, Make Your Momma Proud) at Nina.
Kanya-kanyang panahon lang yan," said Juris.November 10, 2007
FUNFARE By Ricardo F. Lo
It was love at first hearing.
As Korina Sanchez recalled, she fell in love with M.Y.M.P. (Make Your Momma Proud) duo Juris and Chin a few years ago when they sang Ill Never Get Over You Getting Over Me on her and Kris Aquinos show Morning Girls with Kris and Korina.
"They were only starting then," related Korina, "but Juris and Chin sang that song with so much feeling that I became their instant fan."
Not long after that, M.Y.M.P. continued to win more hearts with their sentimental (and, may I add, "unhysterical") style of singing, with their beautifully-blended voices, rising over and above the ear-splitting sound of bands and creating their own exclusive niche on the music scene.
"I was impresssed all the more when I learned that they drew SRO crowds during their two concerts at the Araneta Coliseum," added Korina, "with many of their fans reported to be jumping over the bakod in a scramble to get in ahead of the others."
Thats why Korina and bosom friend Vivian Sarabia gladly joined the creative team of the group which is producing the M.Y.M.P.s Sentimental Tour (of four cities around the country) when they were told that the M.Y.M.P. was topbilling it.
"I can listen to them sing Ill Never Get Over You Getting Over Me over and over again without getting tired of it," said Korina.
Asked why, she said half-jokingly, "It hits a soft spot in my heart. You see, ilang beses na akong iniwanan ng boyfriend. Well, mayroon din naman akong iniwanan and what I know is that nagsisisi silang lahat."
Dared to name names, Korina begged off. Suffice it to say that she and her boyfriend, Sen. Mar Roxas, have been happy together for four years now (their "anniversary" falls on May 21, birthday of Nora Aunor), never mind if they havent set a wedding date yet.
Vivian ("Eyewear Stylist to the Stars") has been an M.Y.M.P. fan herself way back when she heard the duo sang Especially For You (original by Kylie Minogue, a cancer survivor like Vivian).
"Tinamaan ako where it should," said the sentimental Vivian, pointing to her heart. "Matindi!"
By coincidence, one of M.Y.M.P.s most-requested songs hits people bulls-eye in the heart. Yes, Tell Me Where It Hurts, which should be included in their Sentimental Tour repertoire (plus the songs theyve been singing in their past concerts and selections from their new album).
Juris and Chin have just come back from their successful first US concert tour that covered San Francisco, San Jose, San Diego and Los Angeles in California; Las Vegas, Nevada; Chicago; and New York.
I know for a fact that the duos New York concert last Sept. 23, produced by Baby Lantin, was sold out weeks earlier.
"At first," Baby told Funfare, "I was a bit worried because the M.Y.M.P. hadnt proven themselves yet in the US concert scene. They are different from other artists who perform as they sing. I mean, they are all over the stage entertaining the audience with more than just singing. The M.Y.M.P. is a mellow kind of artists. Kumakanta lang talaga sila."
But Babys worries vanished when tickets sold like pre-paid cellphone loads.
"Their concert was successful," said Baby. "Everybody went home happy after enjoying a different kind of concert."
Commented Mario Bautista, "I like the M.Y.M.P. because, unlike some singers, they dont scream; they simply sing. Its very relaxing listening to them."
Guesting on the M.Y.M.P.s Sentimental Tour is Nyoy Volante who said he can perform with the duo "spontaneously" even without rehearsing.
"I can jam with Juris and Chin anytime, anywhere," said Nyoy who denied rumors that he and Jimmy Bondoc are having a misunderstanding over Nina, Jimmys "ex" and Nyoys "current."
"Before I courted Nina," said Nyoy, "I first asked Jimmys permission. Jimmy and I are still friends."

Sentimental Tour will be staged on Oct. 3 at the CPU Gym in Iloilo City; Oct. 14 at the De La Salle Gym, Bacolod City; Oct. 20 at the Folk Arts Theater in Manila; and Oct. 28 at the Waterfront Hotel Ballroom, Cebu City.
