Chart-Topping Acoustics By Christian Bautista Becoming one of the unforeseen flag bearers of the bustling acoustic music scene, MYMP has been enjoying tremendous success as of late. The band, which recently released a live album called Versions, garnered a gold record distinction in less than a month. As a result of the album's commercial success, MYMP, which is composed of vocalist Juris Fernandez and guitarist Chin Alcantara, has been duly recognized in this year's Awards, being nominated for Best-Selling Album of the Year. PULP recently caught up with the soft-spoken Fernandez, who reveals the triumphs and transitions she has experienced with the band. Where did you get the band's name? Sa gitarista namin, si Chin. It's for his mom who died noong seventeen siya. How did the band make the transition from a four-piece, all-male rock band to a pop duo? After rock, nag-shift sila to pop music. Kasi, hindi naman ako marunong sa mga instruments What kind of music do you listen to? Kahit ano, kasi hindi rin ako masyado mahlig makinig. 'Pag may mga inaaral, nakikinig ako. Meron naman akong nagugustuhang mga kanta. Halo-halo naman eh, no one in particular. Why did you decide to get new members? Noong nag-start 'yung first album namin, dalawa lang kami ni Chin. Tapos kumuha na rin kami ng bagong back-up singers. Nag-decide kami na kumuha ng bagong members kasi mabo-bore 'yung mga tao kung dalawa lang kami at ganoon lang yung tunog namin. So, parang conscious decision na rin 'yun for us na nandoon pa rin 'yung acoustic sound, pero mas maganda 'yung tunog. Which do you prefer, a complete band set-up or just you and a guitarist? Kahit ano. Okay naman basta mas gusto ko lang 'yung tunog na medyo scarce, basta hindi ganoon kaingay. Hindi naman malakas 'yung boses ko eh. 'Yung kind of music namin, okay lang kung gaano kadami kasi okay naman tumugtog 'yung mga kasamahan ko. What has changed since you hit it big? Dumagdag siyempre 'yung trabaho namin, so lesser time rin na makapag-pahinga. 'Yung oras na wala kaming trabaho talagang inagamit namin. What can people expect from your next album? Gusto namin sana by this time, we'll try to make all-original songs. Kasi both our albums, halo eh, original tsaka revival. So, kung kaya namin lahat ng songs kami gagawa, better. Siyempre accomplishment 'yun na you can make your own songs and ma-release siya.
